Si lo hubiera sabido...
For me this was not my first experience in Russia, but for a first-time student there I think comfort in the language is more important than for other countries. In Russia, I've also found it particularly difficult to achieve a balance of immersing yourself in the new culture and keeping yourself sane by maintaining a few familiar habits or practices from home. Don't fall into the trap of hanging out only with Americans or expats in general, but also don't let yourself go native to such an extent that you put your own self on hold.

Recomendación personal
This institute is best for those doing historical research and is not appropriate for undergraduate study abroad. The European University in St. Petersburg, however, is a great school and if they have opportunities for study-abroad or exchange, that is a great place to go if you want to spend a semester or year in St. Petersburg.

Talk to as many people as you can find who've been to Russia for an extended period of time before you go. It is useful to read published information, but you will always find out the best info from those who've been themselves and know the lay of the land.
