That just because you are friends with someone before you go, living with them might turn into a nightmare!!

The uni is ok, but there is a lot of social politics going on. The french girls who attend the uni are very possessive of the international men, even if they are not with them. Beware!! You may find yourself getting evil looks and talked about, and you have no idea what for!!

Try to get a place in Rouen rather than Mnt-St-Aignon.Even though that is where the uni is, most of the nightlife is in Rouen and the last bus back to MSA is at 11.30. Make sure you get a cogito (student) bus pass as soon as you get there, as this makes bus travel a lot cheaper. You will constantly be travelling between Rouen and Mnt-St-Aignon.

The actual university is very good, but not so much the classes that are available to international students. If you want some really good classes, look elsewhere.

Rouen was a cool city to visit and live in for a while. I really learned a lot about Normandy; it's history and culture. Rouen was nice at first, because it was urban, yet had a keen sense of history and quaintness. Paris would have been too much to handle at first. However, I am more urbanely focused, and quickly mastered and tired of Rouen. If you are afraid of a huge city, Rouen is very comfortable and safe, but if you are from New York or a comparable large city, you'll probably be wishing you had chosen Paris.

Go and try to be as social and open as possible. No point in going if you don't like meeting new people and being in new situations. EXPLORE!

One of the best times in my life. I don't think those 4-months could have gone any better!

Academic
Course recommendations
I would recommend taking all of the courses in French as opposed to English. The professors are very understanding and are more than willing to work with you on your language comprehension, and your language comprehension and literary skills will improve dramatically.

The attendance policy is important, but I would like to see more emphasis on the quality of projects assigned when assessing grades.

Personal comments
My main goal in coming to this university was to improve my French language skills. I was able to accomplish this goal by benefiting from my french language courses, as well as interaction amongst the students and professors. The most improvement I gained resulted from comprehension in class and spending time with French people outside of school.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
The apartment block that I lived in had other students living there as well. So even though I had my own space, I was not alone. Also, there was pool and a bar and cleaners on a friday. These cost only a fraction more( when divided by 3 people) than the IFI residences.

Personal comments
IFI did not have its own student halls, students had to live in a block of rooms rented by IFI. These were awful. As it wasn't only students that lived there, girls were oftened harrassed by strange men in the laundry rooms etc. The rooms were tiny, toilets were shared with neighbours, and there was no kitchen, just a small hob in the room. The only plus point was that it was near to IFI.
