I took many trips and spent a lot in travel. I also went out more in France than I did when I was at home. But I did save money by cooking for myself rather than eating out at cafeterias and restaurants. But I found that everyday shopping (groceries, clothes, music, etc.) was generally more expensive in France than in Canada.

If you study in France for more than 3 months, you may be eligible to apply for lodging assistance through CAF (Caisse d'Allocation Familiales), but you must have a residence permit. As for travelling, if you're lucky, you may catch seat sales on Ryanair or Easyjet, two low cost internet airline companies, and save tons of money on airfare.

I didn't own a cell phone while on exchange, so I didn't spend on that. I shared a room, so that worked out a lot cheaper than it would've been otherwise. Nightlife, you walk everywhere so no need for taxis, and there's never any cover which is a plus. And I took the opportunity to travel more often that I do at home, and that was expensive considering I was working in Cdn dollars.

Lille is less than three hours away from several metropolitan cities: Paris, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Luxemborg. There are also numerous charming villages that are worthy of exploration as well. Travelling on the train is inexpensive with the carte 12-25. This is different from the U.s. where everything is so spread out and traveling is quite expensive.

If you travel with student organizations, it becomes extremely cheap to travel.
