Be eager to travel and to lead active social life. this makes your stay more attractive. Get involved in cultural life - visit theatres, concerts, museums etc. There is much to see! This also bring more impressions about the stay

Make sure you are social, that is the real way to learn the culture and the language. Television and radio helped me a lot with idoms and slang, its good to have one of each.
