How many forms there are to fill in. Be prepared to stand in alot of queues when you first arrive. Its a hassle to sort everything out but it is much easier if you do it in the beginning. Make sure you regisiter with the Auslandsamt, otherwise you may find you are not eligible for some services. Once the forms are all filled in though, its plain sailing! (Ask about Wohngeld, money given to students on a monthly basis to help with living costs!)

Personal recommendation
The people are friendly, its not too big or too small and there is alot of support should you need it. The Uni parties are fantastic and the teaching standards are very high.

Food is much cheaper here. If you are a student you get a pass for all the local public transport. The accomodation was much cheaper than at home but then a bit more basic. The nightlife is cheap too. Clubs are usually free to get in but because you can stay out until 5am you tend to drink less over a longer period of time.
I spent more on the telephone because I used a german mobile or payphone. It seems cheaper to get a land line installed, especially as they have special rates for students. (Check out one-tel)

If you are withdrawing money from an english account it is better to take out a large sum every so often rather than small amounts every few days. This way you incur less charges from your bank at home! If you don't want to carry large amounts of cash with you, open a bank account it is really easy once you have registered with the Uni and the Auslandsamt!

The cost of living here is cheaper so I tended to spend less on food and accomodation. The travel facilities are brilliant. The local transport networks are free with a student card and there are really good deals available both for journeys by bus and train. I spent less on a night out in Düsseldorf but tended to go out a lot more than I would at home, so on nightlife I spent about the same.

If you have the patience to wait for Deutsche Telekom, get a phone installed in your room, it saves alot of money in the long run. Beware of using english mobile phones abroad it gets very expensive!
