Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: With a family
Why?
The only way to learn a language is to learn the culture, and the only way to learn a culture is to immerse yourself in it.

Personal comments
I can't really speak to it, except that it's a nice location, but obviously I feel that the students who live there do not get nearly as much Spanish experience as those who live with families.

Academic
Course recommendations
I would suggest taking a phonetics class. It really helped answer a lot of pronunciation questions I had. My linguistics class also inspired me to change my major concentration.

I would maybe suggest having computers in every dorm room, instead of just in two computer rooms. That's it.

What is great about Spain with regard to learning Spanish is that not many Spaniards know English. Therefore, you are stuck having to communicate in their language which only helps your spanish language ability in the end.

Other sources of funding:
Family
Personal savings
A private grant

I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits
My home university paid for all the basics, and this came to be cheaper than studying in Chicago. Anything else I wanted (which I didn't need), I paid for myself.

Personal comments
Right now the Euro is slapping the dollar around, so I would focus on cutting down on superfluous costs (extra food, cute clothing that you just don't need, ordering expensive drinks as opposed to the cheap tintos de verano and beer), and use that money on traveling, if you so desire. There are plenty of cheap airlines (ryanair, easyjet, halconviajes, edreams, etc.) so take advantage of those.

Take EVERY opportunity to practice! Don't be shy! Do everything you'd do in your home country (and more), but in Spanish! Stop hanging around other people from your country!

I'd certainly recommend it. It's small, but it gets the job done well and Toledo is an enchanting city.
