I wish I had known...
The greencard issue:had I known that it will be very difficult to get a job without greencard, I would have tried the lottery system even before I came. I got a job ok but found out that there were quite a few companies which don't even interview non-residence. (maybe this may have changed since mid '90s since the job market is so good right now)

Personal recommendation
Highly recommend it, if you like to be challenged. It's a big melting pot filled with people from various cultural and financial background, which open your eyes to no end! With 7 different undergrad colleges, courses you can take is endless...when you come out of Cornell, you will acutually feel you learned something and used your brain.....and what can I say, Cornell has one of the most beautiful campus I have ever seen!

If you feel English is not up to par to attend as a full time student, you may want to look into taking ESL classes. For instance, Cornell has a short-term courses you can take. I don't believe as a ESL student, you can take any other course, but you will get to tase the life on campus.

Academic
Course recommendations
I would definately go for anything taught by Professor Bhojraj. One of the most inspiring teacher I have ever had. Also, make sure you limit the number of classes with case studies. These take up a lot of your time, and you want to make sure to have some time aside for relaxing and having fun!

Not really. The MBA-school is totally different from the SSE, and I think this is a valuable experience. However, it is important to keep in mind that this does affect the academic level of the school. At an MBA-school, what you are taught is how to apply theory in practice, and not as much the background of it. This is a big difference.

Personal comments
Getting an apartment for a short period of time is tricky in the USA. Generally, the landlords demand at least a 12-month lease. However, if you play your cards right, you can get by this. But it is a gamble to try to get your own accomodations. I got lucky, and found something the first day. Unfortunately, this is the seller's market, and therefore, rents are high. But that's life. I thought it was pretty reasonable anyway. Your apartment is where you sleep - not where you spend all your time. You should be out meeting people anyway!

I wish I had known...
Nothing in particular. I managed to get in touch with a student from the school, and talked to him a few times before coming over, in order to have a better feel for what to expect.

The only negative side with Cornell is its location, at least when arriving. Book very early, and try to get to Syracuse Airport. From there, you have one hour bus ride, which is not bad. You can also arrive directly to Ithaca, but I suspect this is a more expensive alternative.

Expenses
Main source of funding:
Government assistance
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work
Personal spending habits
Because of the exchange rate for the SEK to the USD, everything becomes very expensive in the States. This includes food and accomodation. The telephone services are generally very expensive in the States, which is something I was not totally prepared for.

Personal comments
With regards to telephone, I would try to bring a cell phone which works in the american system, and then get a cash calling card for it in the States. This saves you a lot of money, as the phone company charges you a great deal for installation and all phonecalls.
