I wish I had known...
the saying hello and smiling thing. I felt it was stupid to say hello and smile at everybody while I was walking in the streets. But now I feel it is nice and it puts you in a better mood.

don't always stay with people from your home country or you will never improve your host country language skills, you 'll miss a lot about discovering other cultures and different people.

1)go an a trip to washington,d.c.! it'S only 8 hrs. by train - a great city (went there twice) with a lot of things to do and see!
2) the harris teeter supermarket (east bay street) has a great selection of foreign groceries, if you ever get homesick...

Overall
In my field of study in Criminal Justice, I would say Charleston Southern University has one of the best programs. The professors are all specialized in various fields in Criminal Justice. I would not recommend the Spanish department since their professors are outdated in language teaching methods and not hands-on with learning the language well.
