English is spoken widely and still somehow an "official" language, so you can interact with the local people in English. This was also a factor in my choice of country - in the Philippines you can also have a close contact with local people if you speak English - unlike other Asian countries like China or Japan. But even if English is widely used in the Philippines it's very useful to learn a little bit of Tagalog - it's not very hard and people appreciate it if you make an effort to learn their local language.

Philippines in general don't speak English very well, as Tagalog is their first language. But the local students speak English very well and many others in Makati do as well.

In the Philippines I didn't even try speak tagalog, but English is an official language.

everybody speaks english, so its no problem to get around.
