Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
Saxony's Apartments too expensive and shabby. New apartment building on the other side of the street: contact 608-251-8777 and 608-442-4200 (Madison property management inc.). Maybe they rent rooms for one semester.

90 % of the exchange students are at Saxony's - that's good for parties, but bad for your language experience. At the summer semester (Jan-May) it's no problem to find another place to live. At the winter semester (Aug-Dec) it could be difficult.

I don't particularly like the American accent, but the state of Wisconsin is not that bad, so I coped. Since, only few Americans speak a foreign language, one had to speak english in order to communicate with the locals.

six courses is the maximum and this is pretty much. too much if you want to have a minimum of social interaction too.

required attendance is very annoying if you're used to independency. there could be more flexibility.

Personal spending habits
housing was very expensive, and food too if you want to buy it downtown. unfortunately all the cheap supermarkets (aldi, woodman's) are outer town and you'd need a car. plus, you need to buy things you couldn't bring oversea. e.g. a boom box, dishes, etc.

great thrift store: st.vincent de paul in 1309 williamson street. withdraw maximum cash at ATM machines with your home debit card. I think this is cheaper than a transfer at once.

If you stay a semester is the best option! Those apartments anyway are on campus so you are near to everything!

The US-Amercian University system is perfect to learn English because of compulsory attendance and a lot of stuff to write and read. Try to speak a lot with natives! Favor them over other exchange students!
