i spoke english quite well before the exchange period. i wanted to experience australia, the language was not a factor in my choice. however, social interaction helped me speaking more fluently and i got to learn some local slang.

plan and buy your plane tickets months in advanced (qantas/virginblue), you will save lots of money. if you want to go to the gorgeous northern australia, do it in the dry season (winter, but beware, it´s the southern hemisphere). also, due to the relative proximity, you will be tempted to travel asia. my advice: leave it for another occasion, australia not only is huge, but amazing, and you better explore it while you´re there, you may not return.

going to australia means doubtlessly an interest in travel. virginblue.com is great web site. if you plan ahead, you can get really cheap fares.

UTS has a housing service. however, i can´t evaluate it since i didn´t use it. sharing a flat with other students was a good choice. it was fun, but you had to take the responsability od managing a "household" serious.
