The telephone is pretty self explanatory when one's schoolfriends are scattered around after many years as a tight-knit group. As mentioned above, accomodation was downright cheap at the time I was there. (I understand that the presence of Prince William has led to an increase in rents, however, so it might be wise for those on a budget to plump for University accomodation. The exclusively student housing in Fife Park and Albany Park (Gannochy) are particularly good value for money.

The wind is frequently fearsome in winter - it can be quite a shock to have your coat blown up and over your head when crossing the road. St. Andrews is one of the sunniest places in Scotland, but take as many warm clothes as you have. The plus side of this of course is that the winters are absolutely beautiful, and the first sign that they are on their way is the heartwarming sight of flocks of geese passing over the town en route from the Arctic Circle to the Hebrides.

One of the most beautiful, intimate and friendly universities in Britain, with a pleasing mix of eccentric British tradition and an outgoing, hip student body.

My only minor quibble is that the compulsory course in Mediaeval English - while instructive - seems largely designed to justify maintaining such a large (albeit talented and extremely approachable) staff in the area of expertise.

Freedom of movement, no queues for the bathroom or kitchen, the relative peace and quiet of not living in a hall of residence.
