Personal comments
there were several good night clubs, of which my favourite place was roxy, especially the students' night on wednesdays. pulse'n'vogue was quite impressive, uropa was pretty fine although small, and republic had some nice parties as well. also the theme parties at the uni were cool. the best pubs were in broomhill (i can't remember the names..) where i lived. as for shopping, you could find everything you needed in meadowhall shopping centre.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
it is more comfortable to live in a self-catering flat or house with some other people than to stay in a hall of residence that has fixed times for meals and strict rules about visitors etc.. living is more relaxed and less controlled.

Personal comments
accommodation was organised very well and the flats were in general very tidy and comfortable. also, they were located within walking distance of the university and the city centre, which was nice. the rent level was slightly higher than i would've wanted but that was expected.

Languages
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: At ease in most situations
Language difficulties

Personal comments
the language the professors spoke was very well understandable, and coping in everyday situations was quite easy, but having a deep conversation with a sheffielder was sometimes quite confusing, as the local dialect was rather difficult to understand.

the same food i used to eat at home cost usually more in england. it took me a while to get used to baked beans and other student food, which was actually cheap. night life and travel took more money because i was more active in those fields.

Personal comments
the only surprise was that i spent more than i expected. things didn't seem to be that expensive but the money just went somewhere. cost-saving tip: baked beans! after a while it's not that bad at all

Academic
Course recommendations
taking courses in other departments than your own can be somewhat complicated, so you should contact the lecturer early before the course starts and ask whether you can take part in it.
also make sure you take appropriate modules as some of them may be too difficult or too easy. the first digit of the module's code tells you in which year you should take it.

1)the orientation week for exchange students just before the term seemed rather expensive but was worth every penny! do not miss it!
2)if you're going to travel a lot, you might want to purchase the student travel card.
