Having maltese friends can be useful, don't stick only with international students.
Winter can be quite cold so do not take summer clothes only.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I lived in University Residence because it was easier for me. You get to know loads of foreign students if you live there, but you can get cheaper and better location if you decide to find your own appartment.

University Residence is old. If you're lucky, you get a good appartment with nice roommates. If you're not... well... it might be better to move out before they make you pay the year accomodation.

Housing
Type of housing: International Residence Hall (off campus)
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
You can find nice apartments with a view of the sea for cheaper than what I paid in the residence hall.

I think that it is a good idea to stay in the international residence hall if only staying in Malta for one semester. Although the living spaces are rather dirty and not very well maintained, the social experience with other foreigners and some maltese shouldn't be missed!!

It's possible to travel to North Africa and Italy easy from Malta. So you might plan your Europe/Tunisia/Egypt trip. Do not forget an umbrella and sun glasses! It's mostly warm ans sunny, but winters are cold and humid with lots of rain. Yeah, when it is raining, the island is flooded. Very unique experiene.

Personal comments
I have to say that Malta has two official languages - Maltese and English. Maltese language looks like a mix of Arabic, English, Italian and French. There was no need to learn Maltese for me as the studies were held in English and everybody understands English there as well. Nevertheless, if the future students want to improve their English, it's better for them to communicate with international students, Maltese people have very funny accent and very often mix words in English and Maltese.
