Sandy Bell's pub is awesome; the band Rantum Scantum is fun to watch, they play at pubs around town often; the Beltane festival in April is also great.
for an American, the 3rd and 4th year courses expect a lot of knowledge from you; the grading system is different, but it's not hard to get used to.
