Food, housing and nighlife are actually more expensive than in Portugal. In terms of travel, it was because I traveled a lot, since there is so much to visit just nearby you.

Accomodation was in residence and cheaper than my rent. I was only in Maastricht for a short period and so spent more money going out and travelling than I would have at home to benefit from the experience. Long distance phone calls are more expensive too!

The main reason is that the price level is higher in The Netherlands than in Spain. But also, I had more expenses. I pay no accomodation and very little food at home. And abroad I exploited the chance of travelling around. At home I do not travel around that much given that I already know the environs.
