Leave early enough to be able to adapt (read: spend some holidays) in the city where you will live in. When the academic year starts, it will still feel a little as holidays, but not as much as before. It is also very useful to already start and learn the language before the academic year.

Make sure you have some knowledge of Spanish before going, so you will be able to find yourself a place to live. Live with Spaniards as it offers you the possibility to speak and understand the spanish slang as domestic terms. Also you get to know the culture and domestic life better. Speak Spanish with every one straight from the beginning even when it seems impossible. Travelling is rather cheap with an international student card. During eatern you should visit Andalusia as it is very green and tempature is bearable in the cities. An excellent time to be had. Lectures are a bit daunting at first, but lecturers generally helpful to international students. Take the time to travel around the outskirts of Valencia and make sure you're there for Las Fallas and San Juan.
