I spent more on most those categories because I simply do not pay for any of those things when I am home. I tend stay home at night and on the weekends, I don't travel, and my parents provide me with housing and food. This experience for me was a great way to do a lot of things that I normally don't do and a great way for me to learn some financial responsibility while asserting my independence.

Do not travel to France with travelers checks or buy euros from the US. The best thing to do is to travel with is take cash out using an ATM. You save a lot on the exchange rates that way.

Be prepared to pay more than expected for social security, insurance and residence deposits. Be sure that the insurance they are asking you to pay for is really necessary. You may find yourself paying for something you already have from home.

Be aware of banks that take advantage of language to sign you up for options you don't want.I would also advise you to keep your bank account open until all that is due to you has been received or it could turn out quite tricky to get your money back.
