Personal comments
When I arrived in Munich I had problems telling the taxi-driver where to take me. This did not last long though - the rest of the international students did not speak English and so German became our lingua franca. My studying linguistics also helped immensly in that I was able to see the similarities between German and English very quickly. By the end of the year I was able to read Die Welt without a dictionary. I found the Germans very helpful and patient in dealing with students who did not have a good understanding of German.

Personal spending habits
Germany, along with the rest of mainland Europe is simply cheaper than Ireland. For example, I went out more in Augsburg than I would at home and still spent less.

If at all possible, try to get a job teaching; the wages are very high and the tax low. Find out where the xheaper supermarkets are - there is actually a large difference in what they will charge. Rail travel is very expensive, so if you are going to do a lot of travel it is worth investing in a BahnKarte.

Overall
I wish I had known...
I was very lucky in that I actually knew someone in Dublin who had relatives in Augsburg - they supplied me with all relavent information, such as which local health certificates are required and where to take out a bank account and health insurance in Augsburg.

Final comments
There is no international airport in Augsburg and the last trains leave Munich at about midnight so it is best to arrive early. Be sure to have all relevant documents as the local authorities will not give much leeway on that front. get a bank account as soon as possible.

Academic
Course recommendations
As an international student it is helpful to take the language courses offered. It is also desirable to stick to seminars rather than lectures, as there is more interaction in the seminars - although there is also a bit more work involved

Personal comments
The library is not very student friendly. Books must be ordered before they can be withdrawn - I feel that this rule should be relaxed as the university has the details of every person who borrows a book.

There were many great bars in Augsburg, the trendiest being situatuated along the "Max Strasse." Other hot-spots included the Mahagoni Bar and Motown. Augsburg is full of cafes; some of the nicest are in front of the picturesque townhall. Augsburg is about an hour away from Munich, so Oktober Fest should not be missed - Augsburg has its own beer festivals as well , all of which are widely advertised.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I would have liked a bigger apartment, and I found, once I arrived that larger accomodation would have been within my budget.

Personal comments
I found the accomodation basic but adequate for the needs of any student. It was a minute walk to the university and connected to the city centre by both trams and buses. The atmosphere in the apartment block was very friendly; there were regular parties, which offered ample opportunities to meet other students and speak German. Overall the accomodation that I received was ideal for my needs.
