In general it seems hard to get a decent place without paying a fortune, come in good time and don't accept anything you are offered. Spending a week or two at a youth hostel will only make you know more people.

Don't stay in Bologna all the time, but take this opportunity to cross Italy from East to West, from North to South! And learn to know the many differences of this great culture!

Personal comments
Due to the fact that English not is very useful in Italy I had the best oppertunities to learn the local language even faster, I today I know it quite well. Even though it was difficult in the beginning the experience of social obstacles and not knowing a language is very important. Furthermore I was constantly supported and well understood by native speakers and staff at the university that showed great understandning.
