There are great discos here. Mambo Cafe and Ay CAray are two places that are al ot of fun. in the centro there is a grat cafe called havana caffe that is wonderful. Its easy to go to the beach town of Progreso thats 30 minutes from Merida. A round trip costs about 2 dollars. Merida is filled with things to do. Every weekned in the centro there is dancing in the streets. This is a beautiful place that embraces its culture and likes to have fun.

Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
it is cheap to live in merida. a furnished apartment costs about the same as a room with a family. however, it is a really good experience to live with a family the first time.

My experiance woth my family was very good. The cost is the only thing that is a little unreasonable. It is also difficult to adapt to having to answer to someoene after living alone for 5 years, but I have learned more from them than anyone else. For this, I would say that a family is a good option.

I learned really fast. At first it is confusing and difficult, but now its like second nature. I first improved on understanding conversations and then speaking. In regards to school I did not really have any problems understanding or communicating.

Personal spending habits
My food was included with my rent to my family, but I do not really eat a lot. So I was paying for more than I could eat. I bought a cell phone in Merida, and I used it just for texting messages to my friends. Calling is expensive, but I bought credit so I never spent more than I thought I would. Housing is a little more expensive than my rent at home, but the security of living with a family is worth it. I barely spent any money going out at night in comparison to what I spend in the US. Travel is cheap. Getting around the town is easy. There is an extensive bus route and the fare is 40 cents. Cabs are slao cheap about 5 dollars no matter where you go. Overall Merida is cheaper.

Final comments
Have fun! Merida is a laid back place with people to match. They love their culture and heritage and are more than happy to brighten your experience in their town. Make friends with natives. This is where you learn the most and have the most fun.
