You have to choose the courses available in Spanish. Be careful of Catalan courses.

Watch out ! The university is "autonomous", it was created to promote the catalan language & culture, so most of the classes are in catalan. If you plan to learn Spanish, you won't have much choice among the classes given there. Many teachers will tell you that they'd rather teach you in French or English, and organize a special class especially for foreign students just after the "regular" class in Catalan, than use Spanish. Beware, then, and try to check that the classes that interest you most are given in Spanish. This university is desperately trying to label itself "international", and has many exchange agreements with foreign universities, but is also eager to promote catalan. It is kind of locked up in its own contradiction.

Take in mind that local language is not spanish but Catalan, so if you plan to attend the UAB it will happen to you as it was for me that you will have classes in catalan; this may be shocking, but you will see that teachers will try (at least some of them( to help. BUt do not ask them to make the class in spanish; since their language is catalan. Just try to see if you can pick only classes that are given in spanish, check this out before you start the course: go to see the professors and ask them.

The most relevant problem to international students is the catalan language; is your own choice if you choose to be in Barcelona you have to deal woith it; personally I end up writing my tesis on Catalan culture, and to me it wa very interesting; I also lived in Barcelona during 3 additional years so catalan identity is something I had to learn.

Most courses are in Catalan, it is not obvious to find interesting subjects in Spanish. I finally did.
