Housing
Type of housing: university flats off campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
The residence I was in was managed, and that was a bit intrusive at times. In some cases the rules were not practical, and being constantly monitored by an officer was irritating

The accomodation was excellent: safe, clean and well maintained. It was little way out of the centre and away from major activity, but the quality of it made up for that

Academic
Course recommendations
My main regret was that there was no opportunity to cross faculties. I was a business student but I would have loved to do photography or journalism as elective but that just was not possible. It also reduced the quality of the exchange program as I was a logictisc student and there was no opportunity to study that in the Business School, though distribution is offered at another faculty

NTU and the English system in general focusses too much on theory. Essays for example had to be argued through the theories and modules of published authors. I felt that student insight and individuality were blocked by this, and in fact it made writing boring.

Overall
I wish I had known...
We were not properly informed about our subject choices. I was informed a week after arrival that I would not be able to follow the course in Distribution, when logistics is my core study in Utrecht. We were also not well advised about the course content in advance, many of my electives were chosen on a blind guess

In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
In some cases there were lecturers who were illsensed towards thier exchange students. I think more effort could have been put into their learning needs. It was sometimes taken for granted that all exchange students were there for a joy-ride and they were treated with some aloofness. This was probably the only institutional downfall, efforts from International Student Support Services were excellent

Final comments
There are alot of student discounts available, using the student ID card. Always ask. Travelling by coach is cheapest, there is a discount card offered by National Express. Travelling in a group also reduces the cost.

Go to the one-pound stores, buy in bulk, buy store brands. Shop in the market. Cheaper supermarkets are outside of the centre.

Personal comments
English is my mother tongue so I had no difficulty communicating and understanding. What I regreted was that non-English speaking foreigners seemed to be alienated by the English students (or vice versa) save those English student who had previously studied abroad.
