Personal comments
Very few people spoke English so I was forced to speak Russian in most situations. Because of this my ability to speak and understand Russian improved while I was there.

More privacy and space for your own. Dormitory rooms were always for two people.

One has to get used to the dormitory systems. Doors are closed over night and there's no in and out, except you have a deal with the guards.
