I wish I had known...

There is a lot about the Russian culture I wish I had known before. However, going abroad is always about making these experiences.

In my opinion:

I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.

The level of bureaucracy is tremendously high. Everything takes a lot of time. Courses are mostly interesting. But only a few profs speak good English.

Final comments

If you chose to go to Russia make yourself ready for a huge cultural shock. However, if you manage this you will certainly be able to manage most other things in life!

A beautiful university, the teachers are great, the campus is very neat and the education level is high

Why?

In the student dorm we spoke a lot in english and as I was in Russia this didn't help my russian much. Nevertheless I had the opportunity through friends from my church there to speak Russian and to improve it to quite a satisfactory extend.

Housng was student dorm like. We had no Internet neither in the rooms nor in the dorm. But it proved to be not such essential as it probably would be in Vienna. We dwelled in double rooms. there were about 40 students coocking in one kitchen which was also student dorm alike. All in all I enjoyed living there.

Final comments

It is very exciting to go by the Transsibirean railway and visit the Baikal. If you have some time left, go to Vladivostok. Of course, Mongolia and China are also very attractive, but in winter quite cold :-) Get your visa in time!
