Once you speak abit of the language and at least try to speak it people open up to you. It is worth to put some effort into it to learn the basics of the language.

russian language wasn´t the language of instruction; But i learned it 20 hours a week so i was able to communicate in all situations although it wasn´t fluent;

Why?
It's better to live in a flat if you want to improve your language skills, because in the dormitory you are just talking English all the time.

The russian language course is very good- about 16 hours per week, so most of the students were able to speak at least a little bit russian after some time.
