My German was not good at all when I first came to Magdeburg, but University offered some courses and I met some local students and improved my language skills reasonably.

Hard to find German people to speak with. Too many people could speak English

Many people in the Administration speak perfect english but the will not use it, even when they are realizing that you have problems to express yourself. This can be a bit hard, especially at the beginning when you have so many administrative tasks to be done and fixed.
