The best University in Russia, or is it so?
Yuliya G
Russia, Undergraduate
Journalism, 2022
Overall
I got the chance to enter the faculty of journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University in the Russia's capital.
This place visually resembles a castle, or as our students kindly call it, a Russian Hogwarts, yet inside it looks just like one of the metro stations, built somewhat in the 1960-s. Turns out, the outer look doesn't quite match what's inside. And I'm not only talking about the building...
Generally, the University promises you the great opportunities thrown at you, once you enter, because of its status and tough studying plan. Suddenly, it turns out the curriculum isn't so hard at all and the employers aren't impressed with your alma mater anymore. Well, it happens, but let's focus on the bright sides now!

1) You feel the greatness - or what's left of it.
The campus is truly magnificent, with the University's buildings located all across the Moscow. My faculty, especially, is located right in front of the Red Square, no jokes. Yet looks can be very deceptive. Russian education system really does need an improvement, including courses at the Faculty of Journalism (which focuses on writing) that does need more...writing, in fact.

2) Networking built out of the brightest young minds of Russia.
Yes, here you will find the best and the brightest broad-minded students, as the folks come all across the whole country (and even from abroad) to study in this University. Your new circle of friends will include kids, enrolled by winning the Olympiad, kids, whose parent are so rich, they could afford buying the whole Uni, and kids who study just as much as they party.
Lots of variants, most likely, you'll meet and befriend them all.

3) Status. Being the student of something that's still being considered "The best University in Russia" is very prestigious. Most of the time the alma mater's name speaks for itself, while you're applying for a job, and it's precious. Generally speaking, this Uni does gives you the feeling of satisfaction you made it to this place and you somewhat conquer it everyday by studying in it.

You should know Russian at an adequate level, you should be prepared for extreme bureaucracy, long winters and sometimes unfriendly people! But you can expect having a great time of your life if you cope with the characteristics of this special country!

You should try to find a community of Russians and internationals, but you should preferably speak Russian with both groups. Especially internationals you should choose very carefully, as there are many foreigers in Russia who think they are better than Russians and are not disposed to cope with Russian (inconvenient) characteristics. But if you just meet such people you won't experience this fantastic country. If you have some time left you should try to find an internship in Russia as it gives you the chance to collect some (Russian) work experience!

Great theoretical knowledge, but lack of practical skills
Dmitrii P
Russia, Graduate
Sociology, 2019
Overall
The university is considered to be the most desirable and recognised place to study in Russia.

The theoretical knowledge I have received is massive, which on the other hand, was not supported by decent amount of practical tasks. I got impression that the purpose of the studies were to raise a new generation of theoretically skilled persons who would eventually get PhD in sociology and build their careers in teaching.

The good thing about being a student there is that everyone has loads of opportunities for non-class activities, as to sports, volunteering, arts, workshops.

The university is orientated on technical disciplines.

I wish I had known...
I wish I had a better understanding of what exactly I was getting myself into. I picked things up fairly quickly once there, however, a clearer picture before departure would have made the adjustment easier.

This is one of the best universities in all of Europe if not the world. It is VERY difficult to survive there. I would recommend this University will challenge every conception that a student from the US brings to it.

If you are travelling to Russia, make sure you understand that it is a VERY hard country to live in at the present moment. Russia is a country that, when you are there, you will not like it. However, after a while in country, you will gain an appreciation of how Russia fits into the world, and how Russians view their neighbors. DO THIS TRIP IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE

It is a good university, it was not that difficult to pass the exams and I had time enough to experience the city, the people, the life.

Do as much as you can. Go to the city, to concerts, museums, theaters, bars and restaurants. Travel as much as you can afford. Russia is worth seeing!
