Anywhere in Christchurch for good food, and fun bars. The strip is a good place to look, also Shooters and the Grumpy Mole are fun. Make sure to go and watch some Rugby at Jade Stadium

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why?
Convienience, especially if you don't have personal transportation. Lincoln township is not very big, and housing would have been difficult to find

The first semester I lived in the self catered halls, which placed me with all international students. Second semester I lived in a flat on campus. This allowed me to live with New Zealanders and was for students older than first years.

Takes awhile to pick up on all of the kiwi slang, but once you do, there isn't a problem.

Academic
Course recommendations
Not as much of a selection of courses. The uni specalizes in forestry, agriculture, and business. It shows in the courses offered. Also, about half of the student population is international, for such a small campus (under 5k) it was a huge part of campus life.

Make sure to stay on top of readings, exams count for a lot more than exams in the states. In a couple classes the final exam was worth more than 50%

Personal spending habits
Food seemed expensive to me, the exchange rate wasn't that great when I was there. Drinks were more in the clubs, than at home. Travel was fairly inexpensive. Going by bus around the south island was easy, and staying in hostels is an easy way to save money on accomodation

I wish I had known...
Only two dorms had internet hook ups, other than that it was all in the computer labs. Also had to pay for internet based on megabyte used. Don't expect housing like in the states, the flat I lived in on campus had a wood burning stove for it's primary heating source.

Do not buy travel insurance in the states, during registration they make you buy a specific type of insurance. Make sure you have it, or you will be double insured. Also make sure to travel around both islands, and to take classes with field trips. It is a beautiful country that is easy to get around.
