I wish I had known...
I wish I would've known that it was going to be a life changing experience and that it'd be the best five months of my life. I would've studied a whole year there.

Email me if you need any information and/or help with choices during your trip. Travel to other countries as much as possible but also travel within Italy as much as possible as well. You may return to Europe later in your life to visit a major city but how many times are you going to get back to those little, culturally enriched tuscan countryside towns??

The class went at a very fast rate which made it difficult to keep up with. Most Italians have a good grasp of English and don't like to communicate with you in Italian if you have a rudimentary knowledge. There were times that I did communicate in Italian, holding basic conversations.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I liked having the independence of my own appartment, not having to be uncomfortable or worry about not coming in late, etc. i would choose to live with Italian people if possible. I roomed with other American girls in florence.

It was a HUGE appartment in the center of Florence. It was 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, a living room, kitchen, dining room, long hallways and a small porch. It was an amazing apartment and fully furnished too! half a block from the main train station (Santa Maria Novella)and right off of Via Tournaboni (the 5th avenue of FLorence. It was found through an agency - whose name was supplied/ recommended by the program.

Course recommendations
I know nothing about art and I wasn't very interested in it, but how do you go to Florence and not study renaissance art? Take a beginners class to get your feet wet. I suggest taking a history class on Florence as well (Florence's 'Quattro Quartieri' was taught by Professor Bellini) so that you have an understanding of where the cities been and how it was shaped.

It's Italy. Everyone's friendly and willing to help, especially your teachers. Don't be afraid to approach them for help or insight. They will go out of their way to no end to help you and then probably invite you over for lunch on Sunday with the family.

I wish I had known...
Italy in the summer has more tourists than you could possibly imagine. The Italians don't like them and things can get a bit expensive. The Sistine Chapel was closed the Sunday I went.

Italy is a cultural Meccah. Go and see everything there is. The nightlife in Florence isn't really that fun.

A little basic understanding of the language and social culture of Italy would of helped me immensely during the first month of my stay.

my one personal recommendation is to improve the Italain language program to cater to students from America especially because we do not have the luxery of experiencing bilingual practice on a regular basis.
