I think my language skills improved a lot from living with a host family. The host university further honed my grammar skills. Yet a lot of people speak English in Paris, so my French perhaps did not improve as much as it could have.

Une bonne université et un corps enseignant excellant, toutefois l'administration de la Faculté des Lettres serait à revoir. Une bonne entente en classes de 30 à 35 élèves par cursus qui favorise la motivation et l'entraide pour mieux réussir.

For most of the categories it's a matter of being in the endless opportunities Paris provided. You can easily enjoy yourself without dropping your savings and can eat and travel cheaply too.

Bring your laptop if you have one, saves on talking to loved ones back home (via aim or Skype which is IMO the best program ever created) and keeps you up to date with what's going on in the country and home. Cost of the trip from Uni was most surprising, though that depends on where you attend school.
