Recommandations de cours
ICADE is VERY VERY different from an american university. Courses are more straight lecture and less interactive between students and professors. I've found professors extremely less accesible due to the fact that most of mine were still full time professionals and have little to no time outside of class to work with students.

Commentaire personnel
Classes in ICADE are taught in a manner that I am not very comfortable with. Most work does not come till the very end of the year and I you find yourself scrambling to remember everything that was thrown at you over the semester. Textbooks are just about non existent so when you don't understand something there is little to no material to try and read or review. I find I learn better when there are more assignments throughout the course and a text book or some other material to reference for refreshing the memory or using as additional help with the class. The lack of those materials and continuing course work remains my main qualm about ICADE.

In the beginning it was hard and at times very frustrating to communicate because I found I knew less spanish than I orginally thought. But VERY slowly I found myself getting more and more comfortable and that improvement still continues with me. Classes are the most frustrating part as my teachers speak very fast and it doesnt help that they also have horrible handwriting so reading what they write on the board is also a struggle. But like I said before gradually it improves and I find myself improving little by little. Today I feel I can sit through a class and at least get the larger part of what is taught in class. Socially, communication has not been as much as a struggle with the exception of the use of a lot of slang by spanish students my age. But I also find that they are more than willing and eager to teach you their slang if you ask them. Just be careful on when to use it! (i.e. NOT on a job interview or when talking to a teacher)

Si j'avais su
No not really. I find the best way for me to deal with a new adventure/experience is to jump into it and deal with it as it goes. I felt I had enough basic knowledge and information with me to deal with whatever had to be dealt with.

I would not do the dual degree program and am still glad I didn't. The school offers more social and experience value rather than academic in my opinion. Joining the E4U student organization there and going to their functions is a great way to meet new international students. The acadmic life there is pretty much a bummer in my opinion. It just doesn't fit well with me I guess. But overall the school is still a good time if you can stop stressing about academics and enjoy yourself a bit. Afterall, this experience is not just about what you learn in school.

Using a cell phone is very expensive in Spain because you have to use prepaid cell phones which have pretty expensive rates. Nightlife got a plus for me just because spaniards go out at night A LOT. Drink prices in Madrid are about the same as an american city and there are cheap bars to be found just like anywhere else as well. Travel is more expensive due to the fact that the dollar is weak against the euro right now so most travel is about the same price as america but only in euros which are worth 1.3 dollars at the moment. Apartments here are much less expensive than in Boston (where I came from) which is a big help when trying to budget money.

Eating out gets expensive, try and cook more often than not. Don't blow all your money when you first get here because your so excited to arrive. There is a hopping nightlife every night in Madrid and it is very tempting to go out every night when you first get here. My advice would be to remember that nights at the bars come and go with not much intrinsic value. I'd rather have some of the money I blew at the bars these days for traveling.

I don't think ICADE has dorms but I think they will help with finding an apartment.

Make friends with Spaniards and they will lead you to the inside spots and cool bars that most "foreigners" don' see.
