I wish I had known...
Yes! The campus of the HU moved that year to an other location south-east of Berlin. That was new for me and it was not mentioned in the catalogue for internationla students.

I loved the location [in the city center of eastern Berlin] and I had no real problems with the university itself.

I have nothing but fond memories of my time in Berlin. I think people may not always think of it as a desirable destination, but it's great once you give it a chance.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I shared the apartment with a wonderful German girl. This meant I had first hand knowledge of where to go and what to do in Berlin, as well as ensuring that I was exposed to as much German as possible.

I didn't hear great things about the accomodation provided by the university before I went - that it was located far out in a pretty unpleasent area and that it was generally thought to be unhygenic! A fellow exchange student opted for the uni accomodation and didn't even move in when she saw it - she ended up finding something herself, another did the same and stuck it out for a week before finding something else independantly. I imagine the situation has improved since though....

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
While living in the Campus was great since it offered the opportunity to meet other students, living in an apratment with natives is probably the best way to get to know the country, language and culture

Berlin is a huge city. It was very helpful to get a room arranged by my host university before I arrived there. Of course, some points (as the cleaness, location) were different from the standards in Switzerland but in general I was very pleased with my (big!) room.

If you have the opportunity to go to a city like Berlin take it. There is so much to do and if you take every opportunity both socially and academically you will have an incredible time. One piece of advise I would give is on arrival at your host city take up as many hobbies, join societies, speak to as many poeple and get as involved as you can, as it will help you settle in and set the pace for the rest of the year.
