In order to get in contact with locals I totally recommend to take the first step, they wont. There are plenty of activities and clubs where locals socialize. Once in such a club, everybody will be glad to help you out.

I recommend travelling to Vietnam. You can book all inclusive tours in the travel agencies throughout the city. I regret extremely that I have not gone anywhere else. Travel, travel, travel it's amaying what there is to see

Before you go to HK make sure you have sufficient funds. Live outside campus is pretty expensive. Take care that you have at least monday or friday off so that you have time to travel. HK makes a great hub to explore Asia. I've been travelling so much. If you're not interessted in it let another person take advantage of the location and prices. I can strongly recommend HKUST. You'll have the time of your life there.

All aspects of the University of Stress & Tension
Veronica
, Undergraduate
, 2021
Overall
TRANSPORT
-------------------
- The line is 10 miles long during peak hours, i.e. 7~9am, 12~2pm, 5~7pm.

- Traffic jam on the way from MTR to campus during peak hours.
- There're only two ways to travel up to the campus (it's situated on a slope), so if these roads are blocked, good luck.

- The school offers free shuttle bus to and from campus in the morning and evening respectively. But again, the queue.

STUDENTS / UNIVERSITY LIFE
---------------------------------------------
- A lot of us love talking and care a lot about grades.

- You'll almost only have time for all things academically related unless you really know how to manage your time like a pro.

- Seem a bit like zombies cause we're permanently exhausted by the coursework. I'm always curious about the percentage of depression and/or anxiety on the campus.

- For this semester, I have a programming lab, a math homework and a quiz every week, plus two programming assignments and two English writing exercises every month. They NEVER stop just because you have other tests/exams or holidays.

- Quite peaceful cause we're all too tired to care about anything other than our studies.

- A lot of societies that you can join upon paying around HKD$100 membership fee. Great way to socialise and build your network.

- A lot of promotion about competitions and schemes that can help you "achieve your full potential". Remember to do your homework, though!

COURSES / TEACHING / GRADING
---------------------------------------------------
- The classic Hong Kong style: stuffing you with information and asking you to vomit it out during mid-terms and exams.

- Assignment after assignment after quiz after mid-term after assignment after ... (help)

- If you're a potato like me, you REALLY need to work hard and smart to get an acceptable grade.

- GPA analysis: >3.5 = genius, 2.5~3.5 = quite good, 2~2.5 = potato, <2 = good luck, lol

HOUSING
---------------
- Halls 1~6:
--> Not the best hygiene.
--> Poor sound insulation.
--> Public bathrooms & toilets.
--> Each has a residing student society, which regularly hosts events and activities for residents. Good luck if you live near a common room.

- Halls 7~9:
--> costs slightly more than Halls 1~6
--> 1 bathroom & toilet for every 4 residents.
--> Slightly better sound insulation.
--> Some common rooms are slightly more hygenic than others, but there's still room for improvement.
--> Halls 8~9 also has a residing student society, but they have a venue for them to host events, so the noise levels are much better than Halls 1~6.

Pros
Great view, nice people; great for those who want to stretch their limits and see if they could survive a fast-paced environment
Cons
Extremely heavy workload, extreme stress, bad food, unfair hall allocation system, poor support for student bodies

international students espeically from mainland should communicate more with local people and local things. Try to be more open-minded and walk out from their lab or office at leisure time. The outside world is not as terrible as they got used thinking about, and there r also something we could learn and improve ourselves.

You can travell very easily to almost everywhere in East and South East Asia. The following destinantions sum up the destinations where at least one group of HKUST exchange students has been during the semester: all around China, Macau, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, East Timor, Korea, Taiwan, Tibet, Myanmar, Pakistan, Brunei, Dubai, Phillipines and some travelled to Australia after the exchange semester. I can definitely recommend Cambodia!!!
