Accomodoation at Slovak universities is generally not very comfortable (rooms are small, usually shared by at least 2 students). I would recommend living out of the compus which is not very expensive for US students anyway.

try to speak slovak when you order or buy something! call a cap and do not take itr from the street (they have to register then, and then ahve to ask you for the correct and not dumped price)

Slovakia is a post-communistic country and its economic situation is not very good (and it doesn't seem to be changed any soon). All that makes Slovakia a "cheap country" for US students.
