most things in host country are cheaper than home due to convenient currency exchange rate, however was more money spent for travel and telephone.

No, it wasn't.

My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)

With the local dialect it was a little bit difficult at the beginning, but after a few months it was no problem to understand other students.

You are going to have 2 free months, called Semesterferien, that means if you don't have to make Practical Job, they you are going to have 2 months for travelling around :P

I was able to improve my language skills thanks to my tandem partner. However, the locals rarely ever spoke to foreigners so I wouldn't count on locals for helping to pick up on German.
