Personal comments
Knowledge of Spanish (and ideally Catalan) is VERY helpful when going to Barcelona although not necessary. I did find there were fewer bilingual locals than at other large European cities.

Exchange students will not fail ESADE's courses unless they really try to. So, to improve academics, the school could hold exchange students more accountable. However, I personally wouldn't like to see that changed.

The catalan people speak within themselves catalan, but this was not a problem as everybody speaks spanish as well and courses were for the exchange students in eiteher spanish or english.
