Academic
Course recommendations
When you do something like a Master's degree you're no longer within the constraints of an exchange program for instance. I did the course I chose because that's the one I wanted to and I had to go and see the professors and apply just as the French students did.

I learnt an enormous amount during this year in Lyon and my French got to a very high standard but then it had to. I was compared against the French students in French so if you're not sure you can truly make the effort have a serious think about it beforehand.

Overall
I wish I had known...
Having previously spent the ERASMUS year in Marseille I was pretty familiar with the bureaucracy and so on that you do encounter with the Carte de Sejour etc and this obviously helped. The best thing is to do research well before you get there because a lot of things start almost immediately with termtime so you don't want to miss out.

In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
Amazing facilities and a lot of very bright people to have around which makes it very interesting. One of the benefits of to going to a Grande Ecole is that you don't want for much and they're generally smaller so you can easily become part of the community if you wish.

Though I had previously spent a year in Marseille with the ERASMUS scheme, I was now competing in Lyon with French students in French on a Master's degree course. I learnt plenty and was really able to add to what I had learnt before and get it up to the next level as I wished when I applied for the place on the course. Again though a lot of effort is required and there's not as much opportunity to go out all the time as I did in Marseille because I was there to work for my qualification and nothing else. Of course I did go out and made lots of new friends, I joined the rugby team again and played in an indoor football team, I even acted in a play(!), but I made progress in real, useful French this time and put it all together with the progress I'd made in Marseille.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I had already spent a year in France as an undergraduate but this time I was there as a post-graduate student. I wanted to live there properly this time which meant sharing with otherolder students.

Though I was there to work for a Master's degree this time I still managed to find a bit of time to go out. There's plenty to do in Lyon and you'll find a lot of the details in the Petit Paumé -a free handbook for students given out at Metro stations at the start of the academic year.
