Overall
I wish I had known...
Exactly how strict age limit for drinking was enforced and the lack of pub culture. Also I would have liked to known how isolated Fort Collins is as a town.

In my opinion:
Stay home.
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
If you like the "geat outdoors" skiing etc.. then the location is perfect. Try to not to get an accommodation exchange but live off campus instead.

Experienced a change in life

Final comments
The climate is very agreeable, vey dry(so bring lipbalm). For the first month you may be tired due to the altitude.
The the bus from the airport rather than downtown Denver. If you like nightclubs etc.. go when you are 21+ and choose a city based uni.
You can look at a lot of advice but nothing beats going there and experiencing it.

Housing
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
On american campus's the "University police" are quite strict in relation to social activities. Also on each corridor there is an "resident assistant" whose job is to monitor your behaviour. Personally I thought they were overly strict on enforcing regulations.

Good choice of food at halls, as they were fully catered. I had to share rooms generally, I prefer my own room. Other than the comments above , the accommodation was fine.

Academic
Course recommendations
Depends on the arrangement with your Home university. A lot will already be decided before you get there, if your year abroad is an integral part of your degree.

Personal comments
Every year the alignment of the courses between your home and host uni's should improve. In retrospect it si probably a good idea to collaborate more with the home students as they know the system better than you.

For real nightlife you need to go to Denver (over 60 miles away). I was under 21 when I was there and the drinking age limit is strictly enforced in America, eg. punishment can be 24 hrs community service for drinking some beer in your bedroom! In Fort Collins on the odd occasion there will also be a police presence in the few clubs that there are.
