The experience of studying abroad was extremely helpful in order to improve my knowledge of the German language and my ability in speaking a foreign language. Thanks to the everyday contact with German people and the possibility of studying and following the lectures in a foreign language I had the possibility to deepen and strengthen my previous, pretty theoretical knowledge of the German language and to acquire some basic knowledge of the slang. At the end of my Erasmus experience I noticed that I could speak confidently and write without too many uncertainties. The ability of understanding both a colloquial and an academic speech was reinforced as well.

All courses at the university were based in the German language. I studied Swedish, French, German and Spanish and all languages used German as their form of translation. No concessions are made for international students in lecture halls with more than 200 students, however lecturers in smaller groups are sympathetic to language difficulties and try to speak a more 'universal' German. The city is small enough to remain very traditional and German and although there is a lot of US servicemen living in the nearby barracks, German is still spoken to international students and efforts are made to help these students integrate.

I spent a lot on travel as I wanted to make the most of this opportunity to see as much of Germany as I could. Wuerzburg has reasonably low living costs so this was less expensive.

Commentaire personnel
I was just surprised by the initial outlay. I could only take 25 kilos of stuff on the plane with me so had to buy all my plates and saucepans and everything once I got there. Thankfully my flatmates had lots of stuff (like a hoover, not provided in German halls) and they let me borrow everything I needed.

Logement
Type de logement: Appartement/maison
Organisé par: Université d'origine
Si j'y retournais je choisirais: Appartement/maison
Pourquoi?
There were so many people living there, it was hard not to bump into people and make friends. Also living in student accommodation off campus meant spending time with "real" Germans/German speakers and not with English people. I had no choice but to speak German.

The housing was excellent. It's ran by a very efficient landlady, who is always on call if anything goes wrong. You have a reasonable sized single room with a sink. There are toilets and shower in the corridors and enough, so that you're never waiting for them.

The university is excellent - especially for law and medicine students. It has absolutely excellent facilities with a new sports campus built in 2004 (it's a mini olympic village!)

Travel to Wuerzburg is easiest with flights to Frankfurt am Main and then a 1.5 hour train trip to Wuerzburg. University buildings are dotted around the city. Look for your faculty and then evaluate which campus accomodation is closest for you.

You have lots of opportunities to travel if you are students. There are very cheap trips to travel in Germany. A good way to know about your host country is to contact with a Tutor. It is very normal in German and you can askfor them in your host accommodation.
