I wish I had known...
1)In America they have fitted sheets (I wish I knew how to put them on the bed)
2) your life will change, you don't know in which way, but it will never be the same!!!!! This is for adventurous types.
3) More English and more about America (especially about colleges). I really had no clue.
4) It is almost 100% sure that on a study abroad you will gain weight, and a lot of it. I even read a study about this. I wish I had know about it. When I realized that first I could fit into my favorite jeans, then had to buy an entirely new wardrobe, I totally freaked out and started feeling terrible about myself. Overall, I gained 10 kgs, and no exercise help me. Be ready for the change in your diet. Try to keep the eating habits you had at home (it might be hard in a college environment + Amherst food is good and abundant).
Bottom line: don't freak out, buy some new clothes. Once you get adjusted to your new life, you'll lose it. (I started losing my 10 kgs after 1 year in America. I am fine now)

Amherst is the best thing that happened to me since I was born. It totally changed my life. For example, I met my husband there.
Perfect size - 1600 students, small quaint town -- for any foreigner who feels lost in the big scary America. Student/Professor Ratio - 8:1, which is very low.
The best education you can imagine.
You may have some difficulty making friends since there are not too many international students at Amherst (max 20 out of 400 per year). It is not as international in spirit as some schools. American students are not as open as in other places (I am mainly comparing to Yale, Smith, and Mount Holyoke) But eventually you will find your niche.
The most beautiful nature -- oh, I still dream about foliage in the pioneer valley. Hikes, little excursions.
I really liked the food - although American students complained, I still don't know why.

Pay attention to your visa status. If you come on J-1 ( foreign exchange student), after the completion of tyour program, you might be forced to go back to your home country and stay there for 2 years. It is almost impossible too waive this requirement, although it is possible to exchange your visa temporarily for another type (F-1)if you want to continue your studies. But eventually you have to fulfill this home residency requirement.
While it should not discourage you from going, PLEA-EA-EA-SE pay lots of attention to it!!!!
P.S. Also, do not always trust the school's person in charge of foreign students. Some of them don't know a thing, some know it, but will not tell you because it is their job; some will be too lazy to do extra paper work for you. For them, an echange student is often too troublesome. Amherst person was all of the above.
Check all the statements they make with experienced friends, Iagora, and immigration authorities. If you find a friendly foreign students dean, s/he is worth her weight in gold.

I had already come to the United States for high school ( from the French Lycee in Barcelona, Spain), so it wasn't really a typical study abroad experience. But I was very involved with international students at Amherst.

The admissions process is extremely selective (in no small part because www.usnews.com consistently gives it its #1 college ranking). As a result, the place is full of unusually accomplished individuals.

A truly world class opportunity. Small place (1600 students) where anonymity is difficult = true sense of belonging (65% of alumni give money to the school every year, the highest in the USA). NOT a particularly international place, but a good sample of the USA's talent pool.

I'd recommend Amherst College in the strongest possible terms. It's an exceptional place, and you'll be glad you went!

Many internationals at Amherst make connections with their compartriots in the Five College area. Mount Holyoke and Smith College are both nearby and have active international student associations, with many non-Americans on campus.
